An 18-year-old first-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-B) Bombay committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of a hostel building on the campus in Powai on Sunday afternoon. The deceased student, Darshan Rameshbhai Solnki, hails from Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The reason for the suicide is still unclear. He did not leave a suicide note. The Powai police have recorded an accidental death report and are investigating further.
According to the Powai police, Darshan was staying in Room 802 of Hostel 16-B on the campus. He committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of his residential building around 1 pm on Sunday, 12 February. The security guard heard the sound of something falling and found the student lying in a pool of blood.
“With the help of security guards and fellow students, the student was rushed to the campus hospital, where doctors checked him and declared him dead before admitting him,” said a Powai police senior officer.
He further added, “We have not found any suicide note near him or in his room. We have taken his laptop into possession and are sending it for examination. Classmates informed us that, the first semester exams of this course ended on Saturday and he had appeared in that exam.”
At prima facie, the police suspect that he jumped from the protective wall of the refugee area on the seventh floor of the hostel building. The police have informed the student’s parents of the incident and they are on their way to Mumbai. The police are further investigating after recording the statements of the security guards and classmates.
