Drunk Rickshaw Driver Attacks Policeman with Paver Block

In a shocking incident early Friday morning, a drunk auto rickshaw driver attacked a police constable with a paver block on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR). The driver, Manoj Chauhan, hailing from Bhiwandi in Thane district, was involved in the altercation.

Constable Chintaman Belkar, 56, from Powai police station, was on night patrol around 3 a.m. at the Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar bus stop on JVLR when he spotted a speeding rickshaw. Belkar stopped the vehicle and asked Chauhan for his documents. The driver, who appeared belligerent, responded sharply. When asked for his name, the 28-year-old obliged.

Belkar, suspecting Chauhan might be under the influence, noticed his slurred speech. A breathalyzer test confirmed Belkar’s suspicion, showing Chauhan was indeed drunk. Belkar instructed Chauhan to step out of his rickshaw and sit in the police van for transport to the station. Instead, Chauhan became aggressive, pushing Belkar to the ground.

As Belkar tried to regain his footing, Chauhan picked up a paver block and struck Belkar on the head, causing him to bleed. Chauhan attempted to escape, but Belkar managed to alert fellow officers, who quickly arrived at the scene and arrested Chauhan.

Belkar was taken to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.
