A 20-year-old college student lost his right little finger in a hit-and-run incident in Powai on October 10 after a reversing commercial cab struck his two-wheeler. The driver, who fled the scene immediately after the collision, was later identified, traced, and apprehended by local police authorities.
The victim, identified as Suyash Kamble, was on his way home after dropping his mother off at her workplace around 8:55 am. According to police officials, the collision occurred on Central Avenue Road near Lucky Store in the Eden Old Market area of Hiranandani Gardens. A commercial vehicle bearing a yellow registration plate abruptly reversed out of a residential building gate directly into Kamble’s path.
The reversing car struck the scooter’s right handlebar, causing Kamble to lose balance and fall heavily onto the road. His right hand became pinned beneath the weight of the fallen two-wheeler, which severed his little finger upon impact. Although alert bystanders attempted to chase the fleeing motorist, the driver sped away from the spot. Despite his shock and severe injury, Kamble managed to memorize and note down the cab’s registration number.
Eyewitnesses and a helpful local youth quickly searched the surrounding area to retrieve the detached digit, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The passerby then rushed the injured student to nearby Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital for emergency treatment, where doctors performed reconstructive surgery around 3 pm that afternoon.
Kamble explained that excruciating post-operative pain delayed him from reporting the incident right away. After resting, he approached the police station on Monday to submit an official complaint.
Using the vehicle registration details provided by the victim, the Powai police tracked down the suspect, Hamidullah Khan. Khan was placed under arrest for rash and negligent driving and was subsequently released after being served a mandatory legal notice to appear.
