Four Hundred Powai Students Join Forces to Clean-up Mumbai’s Juhu Beach

On December 13th, Juhu Beach in Mumbai buzzed with youthful energy and a sense of purpose as 400 students from Powai schools rolled up their sleeves for a beach cleanup. Organized by the Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), a Bengaluru-based organization, this initiative marked a significant step toward fostering environmental awareness and civic responsibility among young citizens.

CMCA, with its 24-year legacy, is committed to shaping young minds into active and thoughtful citizens for a sustainable India. Partnering with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), they orchestrated the Mumbai Beach Cleanup 2024 Drive, targeting the ever-popular Juhu Beach. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, where locals and tourists alike flock to enjoy volleyball games and snacks like bhel puri, the beach struggles with pollution issues. Litter often piles up due to both public negligence and the ocean tides bringing in debris.

The cleanup began early at 7:30 a.m., with students from schools such as Gopal Sharma Memorial School, Powai English High School, Chandrabhaga High School, SS Sahani, and Guru Nanak English School participating. BPCL and CMCA ensured the students’ safety by providing gloves, aprons, and caps. Nine CMCA volunteers, along with teachers from the participating schools, joined hands with the students, guiding and encouraging them throughout the event.

Notably, members from CMCA’s head office in Bangalore traveled long distances to lend their support. Their presence underscored the organization’s dedication to environmental causes and community involvement. As the students combed through the sand, picking up litter and sorting recyclables, they were rewarded with snacks and juice, a small token of appreciation for their hard work.

The cleanup wasn’t just about removing trash but also about instilling a sense of environmental stewardship in the students. Brief interviews conducted during the event revealed that many students felt a newfound sense of responsibility toward their surroundings. The transformation of the beach by the end of the day was a testament to their efforts.

CMCA’s work doesn’t stop at beach cleanups. Their broader mission involves engaging young people through educational programs in schools and community centers. These programs cover essential themes like responsibility, respect, gender equality, and environmental harmony while equipping students with vital 21st-century skills such as teamwork, empathy, and critical thinking.

In collaboration with the government and other organizations, CMCA impacts over 170,000 young people annually across more than 2,400 institutions in Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. This extensive outreach is supported by strong ties with government entities, educational institutions, donors, and educators.

The Juhu Beach cleanup was more than just a local event; it was a successful part of CMCA’s ongoing efforts to raise civic awareness and encourage youth participation in community betterment. By organizing such impactful activities, CMCA continues to empower the next generation to contribute positively to society and the environment.
