NSS on every third Sunday of month organising cleanliness drive on Powai Lake. Wherein members of Nisarg Swasthya Sansthan in association and participation of the residents of Powai try to do their best to take out hyacinth and other weeds from the Powai Lake.
NSS is an active NGO of more than 300 volunteers dedicated to the cause of health, happiness, and cleanliness in the society. They follow the revered principle of ‘APNE LIYE JIYE TO KYA JIYE’. Presently the NGO is striving hard and actively making all efforts for the cleanliness of Powai Lake. Every Friday, from 7 am to 8 am members of Nisarg Swasthya Sansthan clean the area around Powai Lake. They have turned 7 KACHRA CORNERS into KUDRAT CORNERS and planted more than 300 plants of Coconut, Jasvandi, rose, jasmine around Powai Lake.
“During the lockdown period, although dumping of garbage (especially residual pooja samagri) has become lesser, yet the problem of Hyacinth (Jalparni) has increased to such an extent that most part of the lake has been taken over by it. Hyacinth had covered the surface of the lake to such an extent that it is not allowing oxygen to be absorbed in the lake water and making a situation that the living organism of the lake has started dying due to lack of oxygen. The situation will further deteriorate in the coming days if hyacinth is not controlled within a time framework. Therefore, Nisarg Swasthay Sansthan had taken a vow on the Makar Sakranti day that in addition to the cleanliness drives around Powai Lake, “we decided to go a step ahead and take out the hyacinth from the lake with whatever resources we have and will save the Powai Lake.” told members of Nisarg Swasthya Sansthan.
Active participation was seen by the residents of Powai during the mega cleaning drive. The NGO had also approached the BMC who assured their possible help for the cleanliness of Powai Lake.
