Powai police on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old man for chain snatching crime. He absconded by snatching the gold chain from the woman’s neck at Hiranandani Gardens, Powai. The incident took place when the woman was returning home after taking an evening walk. Within 36 hours of the crime, Powai Police arrested the accused from Diva. The arrested accused has been identified as Pannelal Mahant Chauhan (27). The police recovered the stolen property (gold chain) from him.
On Monday Harjitkaur Singh Saini (58), a resident of the Panchkutir area in Powai, had come to the municipal park near the Ambrosia building in Hiranandani to take an evening walk. After finishing her walk around 8 o’clock when she was walking on Orchid Avenue, an unknown person came from behind, pulled the gold chain from her neck, and ran away.
“After snatching the gold chain, the man ran to the nearby Ambrosia Municipal Park. We searched for him throughout the park, but we found that he had escaped by jumping from the other side of the park,” Powai police said.
A crime detection team headed by Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Patil and Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Lad started an investigation by obtaining CCTV footage from the area.
“We learned that the person seen in the footage lives in Chandivali, Sangharsh Nagar. When we went there and inquired, we got reliable information from our sources that he was shifted to Diva area of Thane. Accordingly, while keeping surveillance at Diva, we detained the accused and interrogated him. He confessed to the crime”, said a senior officer of the Powai police station.
“We have recovered the stolen gold chain from the accused”, told Sr. PI Budhan Sawant.
Under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Budhan Sawant, Police Inspector (Crime) Ganesh Patil, Detection Officer API Vinod Patil, API Vinod Lad, Police Constable Babu Yedge, Sawant, Police Naik Aditya Zende, Abhijit Jadhav, Police Shipai Sandeep Surwade, Dhuri, Deshmukh, Bhoye investigate the crime.
