A fully equipped public toilet has been constructed by BMC for the convenience of the citizens beside Pramod Mahajan Park at Hiranandani, Powai. But the constructed public toilet has been kept closed from the first day on the pretext of the non-availability of facilities and the citizens’ money has been wasted. So, if there were no facilities, why build this toilet? Powaiites is now asking questions.
Hiranandani area is full of many amenities such as tall skyscrapers, clean roads, well-developed green parks, playgrounds for children, and footpaths for people to walk. Everyone must feel that there is no shortage of anything in Powai, Hiranandani area. But this is not the reality here, citizens have been struggling for public toilets for many years.
In view of that, toilets have been made in the parks here for the convenience of the citizens. But since it is open only during park time only.
What is the need for public toilets?
There should be a public toilet in this area because, in such a large area, with a population of nearly 2 lakhs, women from the nearby areas come for housework, while men come to work such as drivers, security guards, and gardeners. For rickshaw drivers and taxi drivers who wait here for the convenience of the residents and office workers.
As there is no public toilet in the Hiranandani area despite the need of the public, the people have taken advantage of the situation in places like the open spaces near the new Hiranandani Foundation School, the road area near the Eden bungalow, the area near the old Hiranandani School, etc.
Considering all this and on the demand of the citizens, a public toilet was constructed in front of the Avalon building on the outskirts of Pramod Mahajan Park in Hiranandani with the efforts of the MLA, corporator, and the follow-up of the Shakhapramukh. Publicity banners were also put up in this regard. However, due to the lack of toilet facilities, it was never opened to the public.
Rickshaw drivers and pedestrians have started using it as it is. Within a few days, the toilet filled up and the bad smell started spreading in the area. Due to the spread of filth in the entire area, the public started latrine outside the toilet instead of going inside. Due to this, the citizens living near this and people coming for a morning walk started to suffer from the strong smell coming from there and this public toilet was totally closed within a few days.
Even though several months have passed since the toilet was closed, this toilet is still neglected, and a notice of ‘this toilet is out of order, hence it is closed’ has been added to it. What is the problem after all? If there was no facility, whys build a toilet? When will the toilet open? When will the facility be available? Local citizens are now asking such questions.
Speaking in this, a municipal official said, “this toilet has been closed as the water supply was not provided to it. Soon the work of this toilet will be given to an organization and it will be opened for the convenience of citizens.”
