A meeting was held on 17 February with Environment and Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray, Deputy Commissioner, Joint Commissioner, concerned officials and Shiv Sena corporators to review the functioning of the existing and proposed infrastructure in the ‘S’ ward of BMC.
After the review meeting, the development plan for the beautification of Powai Lake, development of infrastructure in the area and creation of tourism facilities was presented. Discussions were also held on ‘Crocodile Safari’ with the help of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation for tourists at Powai Lake.
The study will be done by tagging the crocodiles of Powai Lake
Crocodiles in Powai Lake are expected to be tagged with ‘Platform Transmitter Terminals’ (PTTs) to study their daily and seasonal movements in the lake. The state forest department had written a letter to the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) regarding the crocodile safari in the lake. This is one of the measures suggested by the Wildlife Institute of India to the State Forest Department.
WII has suggested some measures before starting a crocodile safari on Powai Lake. Crocodile tagging is important in this. Before starting the safari, it will be necessary to pay attention to the area for tourists, places where crocodiles live in large numbers and the construction of boats so that tourists do not come in contact with water. It is necessary to install a crocodile monitoring-cum-tourist safety place, speed boats, life jackets, first aid kits, crocodile handling kits, one or two watchtowers, etc. A quick assessment study is needed to understand the current status of the crocodiles in the lake which is important for planning. Some crocodiles can be tagged with PTT for surveillance and to prevent human-crocodile conflict.
WII has also suggested measures to improve the biodiversity and environmental condition of the lake. All wastewater should be treated before discharging into the lake. The area around the lake should be made a plastic-free zone. Water hyacinth must be removed from time to time. Desilting at selected places should also be done.
