In a shocking turn of events, a seemingly trustworthy housemaid has left a Powai family reeling after stealing jewellery worth Rs 5.89 lakh. The incident, which unfolded in the upscale Raheja Vihar area, has led to the arrest of the accused under Section 306 of the Bhartiy Nyay Sanhita.
Sultana Lalu Shaikh, a resident of Tungagaon, had been a familiar face in the Gupta (name changed) household for three and a half years. The Guptas, who reside on the 12th floor of the Raheja Vista building, had grown to trust Shaikh implicitly. She had become a part of their daily life, often taking care of their home even in their absence.
However, this trust was shattered on July 19 when Mrs. Gupta discovered that several pieces of jewellery and a significant amount of cash were missing from their cupboard. This prompted Mrs. Gupta to file a theft report with the Powai Police Station.
During the subsequent investigation, the police interrogated several individuals, including Shaikh. “She confessed to the theft, revealing that she had taken advantage of the family’s trust and stolen the valuables in their absence,” told police.
Assistant Police Inspector Pawan Yadav, who is leading the investigation, confirmed Shaikh’s arrest and stated, “The process of recovering the stolen jewellery is underway.”
