In a shocking turn of events, two minors from affluent families broke into a luxury apartment in Powai’s prestigious Hiranandani complex, making off with Rs 3.45 lakhs in cash and a trove of gold and diamond jewelry. Their motive? To indulge in a life of opulence inspired by the hit crime drama series ‘Money Heist.’
One of the young is preparing for the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET), while the other is a Class IX student. Both are enrolled in reputable educational institutions in Chandivali and Hiranandani, respectively.
Powai police revealed that the duo committed the crime with the intention of purchasing high-end luxury items and for Lavish Living. Police have recovered stolen jewelery and cash from both.
The case came to light when a resident of Hiranandani filed a complaint at the Powai police station, reporting the theft of gold and diamond ornaments along with cash from her flat. “We took fingerprints of all workers in the building and identified the accused after repeated examination of the CCTV footage,” said Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Sonawane.
“As minors, the Juveniles were questioned in the presence of their parents and admitted to the crime,” told Detection Officer API Santosh Kamble. “They gained entry by removing the glass of the bathroom window and climbing in from the balcony,” he added.
During interrogation, it was revealed that one of the suspects is a 17-year-old college student from Chandivali, who had scored an impressive 93 percent in his SSC exams and is currently preparing for the NEET exam to pursue a career in medicine. His father works in merchant navy, and the family resides in a posh building in Kanjurmarg East.
The other suspect, a 15-year-old Class IX student from a reputed school in Hiranandani, Powai, comes from a family that owns a transport business.
The police further disclosed that these minors had committed similar thefts in two other flats in the Vikhroli area, with FIRs registered at the Park Site police stations for those crimes as well.
