Shirley Udaykumar, Principal of Powai English High School, has been awarded the Meritorious ‘Gunwant Shikshak’ Award for the year 2022-2023 by the Maharashtra State Teachers Council. Veteran poet Ashok Naigaonkar presented this award to Udayakumar for her exceptional academic work and social service.
Poet Ashok Naigaonkar, Senior Literary Prof. Ashok Bagwe, former Teachers MLC Bhagwanrao Salunkhe, former Teachers MLC Nago Pundalik Ganar, Dnyaneshwar Mhatre, Ulhas Vadodkar (President-Maharashtra State Teachers Council Mumbai), Shivnath Darade (Maharashtra State Teachers Council Mumbai) were present on the occasion.
The Annual Convention of the Maharashtra State Teachers Council was held on February 11th at the Shivaji Mandir Theater in Dadar, Mumbai. At this event, they discussed various development plans concerning teachers. Some teachers and students were honored for their outstanding achievements in the field of Education. On this occasion, Shirley Udaykumar was felicitated with the ‘Gunwant Shikshak’ Puraskar.
Udaykumar has been working in the field of education continuously for the last 35 years. She is always striving hard for the holistic development of students, she has a passion to do something for poor and needy children. When many parents lost their jobs during the Covid period, she took support from society for the students by collecting funds for those who could not pay their school fees due to financial crisis by raising funds for more than Rs 1 crore, thus preventing them from being deprived of Education. Her work has set a precedent not only in Powai but in schools all over India.
Covid times was a crisis time for many and seeking funds was the most difficult task. She said “it was the grace of God and beautiful souls came to support her. Many sponsors haven’t met her yet but left a positive aura that is still going on.”
Even after being promoted from Headmistress to Principal, she has been adding new ideas to the development of the future of students. Udaykumar has been showered with wishes from all corners of Maharashtra for the meritorious Gunvant Shikshak Award.
