Rare Caecilian found in Powai, Milind Nagar Area of ​​Mumbai

A rare species of amphibian have been found near a house in Milind Nagar, Powai. Locals informed the Tails of hope Animals Rescue Foundation about this. Akshay Ramesh Bhalerao and Jonathan Felix D’Souza rescuers of the Tails of Hope Foundation rushed there and rescued Caecilian safely. The THARF team informed Vaibhav Patil and Surendra Patil of the Maharashtra Forest Department about it. After being found fit to release by the examiner, Caecilian has released into its natural habitat.

This creature is called Ichthyophis bombayensis in classical language, Bombay Caecilian in English, and Devgandul in Marathi. It is amphibious that can live in both water and on land. Earthworms are its main food. It secretes a sticky secretion on its body to protect itself. As a result, it is not easy to catch as its body becomes very smooth.

Caecilian is found in large numbers mainly in the Western Ghats. The Hope Foundation team said that its identity can be determined by its heel-shaped eyes and its circular ringed body.
