The monsoon rains have graced Mumbai, creating a quieter streetscape, yet amidst the downpour, thieves have seized an opportunity in Powai. Recent reports reveal that two homes in the Mhada building in Powai fell prey to burglars, with gold ornaments and cash totaling ₹1.89 lakhs stolen.
WhatsApp groups are buzzing with unverified theft reports, stirring unease among residents. Confirming these fears, a burglary occurred last week in the Mhada building, targeting the homes of the Bhalekar family on the 6th floor and the Kattimani family on the 5th floor while they were away at work.
According to Mr. Bhalekar’s statement to the police, the burglars struck after his wife left for work in the morning. He dropped his daughter at school and then departed for work himself. Upon returning home in the evening, he discovered the door’s latch broken and their gold and cash missing from the cupboard.
Adding to the chaos, Mr. Bhalekar heard a commotion from the 5th floor during his inspection. He rushed down to find that the Kattimani family had also been burgled.
The Powai Police have launched an investigation, registering a case under Sections 305 and 331(3) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita. “We are scrutinizing CCTV footage from the surrounding area and have identified several suspects. Efforts are underway to gather more information, and we expect to apprehend the culprits soon,” stated the Investigating Officer of Powai Police Station.
