The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a 31-year-old man allegedly with counterfeit currency notes. Crime branch unit 10 arrested a man from Powai on Tuesday and seized fake notes worth Rs 80 lakh from his possession. The accused has been identified as Saujanya Bhusan Patil, of Umroli area in Palghar district.
Mumbai Crime Branch Police constable Satish Kamble on Tuesday received confidential information that a person was carrying fake currency notes coming into the Powai garden area of Powai. Accordingly, on Tuesday, December 27 night team from Crime Branch laid a trap in the area and kept a vigil. At this time, the team noticed a person who came on a bike (MH-48-AZ-1576) walking suspiciously in the area with a red bag.
“He was detained and seized the counterfeit currency from his possession,” police officials said.
Police recovered 160 bundles of 500 rupees fake notes from the bag, i.e. 16000 notes which he was supposed to hand over to another suspect.
A case under sections 489 (a), 489 (b), 489 (c), 489 (d), 120 (b), 34 of IPC has been registered against Patil in Powai police station for possessing fake notes and attempting to circulate them. He was produced before the court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till January 4.
Meanwhile, the police are conducting a thorough investigation into this case. They are also getting information about who else is involved with him. The Police are suspecting that four to five people were involved in the syndicate printing the fake currency. The police suspect that one of the masterminds is from Nashik and searching for him.
