Vijay Diwas: Ex-Servicemen Inaugurate Safety Drive to Curb Crime

Nominated Corporator Shriniwas Tripathi spearheaded the first phase of what he has described as a flagship ‘safety and security’ drive in Powai, with the instalment of CCTV cameras in the Area. The inauguration of the first round of CCTV installations was held in Powai’s Jal Vayu Vihar Chawk and near Hiranandani Foundation School.

The opening ceremony was flagged off by eminent Indian Armed Forces veterans on the occasion of Vijay Diwas 2020, marking the 49th anniversary of India’s watershed victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War for the liberation of Bangladesh.

Speaking about the initiative Tripathi said, “Our suburb has seen a spate in petty thefts and chain snatching, prompting us to take the necessary precautionary measures. We have installed our first batch of cameras at the T point near Jal Vayu Vihar and SM Shetty School. While the second has been fitted near Hiranandani Foundation School. The CCTV feed will directly be monitored by the Powai Police Station, helping and empowering our police personnel to take more swift actions against offenders.”

“We aim to install CCTV camera’s all across Powai in a bid to crack down on petty crimes and Ensure residents safety.” Added Tripathi.

When asked about why the inauguration was held at Jal Vayu Vihar he said, “Jal Vayu Vihar is the home to Powai’s Indian Armed Forces veterans and on the occasion of Vijay Diwas, commemorating the ’71 War, a conflict in which many of our Powai veterans have fought in. The event was held in their honour as attribute to their service, ensuring the safety and security of our country while in uniform. It was truly an honour for us to ensure the safety of those who have served to ensure our safety and security all their life.” further added Tripathi.

The event at Jal Vayu Vihar was led by Commander Mani Thomas, a distinguished veteran of the Indian Navy. Speaking about the initiative Cdr. Thomas said, “The CCTV coverage will help in halting crime of mobile and purse snatching. The speeding vehicle menace too will soon stop. I am sure residents of Jal Vayu Vihar will join me in thanking the concerned for this initiative.”

The inauguration at Hiranandani Foundation School was flagged off by citizen activist Priya Mohan. Several prominent residents, Indian Naval and Air force veterans were attended the event and have cited their satisfaction towards the initiative.
