Lake Front Solitaire Burglary: ‘Spider Thief’ and Accomplices arrested; Search for Jewelry in Gutter; 95% Recovery

Pramod Chavan | On July 20, an unidentified thief broke into Harish John Kattukaran‘s flat No. 502 in Lake Front Solitaire, Powai and stole gold and silver jewelry worth Rs 26.85 lakh. Powai police have solved the high profile burglary case in a span of 20 days and handcuffed four accused. Police have also recovered jewellery worth Rs 24,97,500 from the accused.

According to the Powai police, Kattukaran has a 3 BHK flat on the 7th floor in Lake Front Solitaire. On the day of theft he and his family members were sleeping in two different flats. At 6.45am, his wife noticed a window in the hall open. Suspecting that something was off, she checked the house with her husband and discovered that the cupboards in the master bedroom were open and their belongings lay on the ground.

They called the secretary of the building and informed the society about the theft. When they found out that burglary attempts were also made on the 4th and 6th floors too, Kattukakara rushed to the Powai police station and lodged a complaint.

Vague CCTV footage

“We only got a vague CCTV footage of roughly 10 seconds. No information was available about the accused.” told Vijay Dalvi, Senior Inspector of Police (addl charge), Powai Police Station.

“It was raining heavily on the day of the incident, and while the area was dark, the accused had managed to climb up to the second floor of the parking lot and then five more floors with the help of a gas pipe. We could not get any other footage of the accused as most of the CCTV cameras of the building were not working”, police said.

“Our undercover informant informed us that a young man who matched the footage was seen in the Alkapuri area in Nalasopara. We set a trap in the area and arrested the accused Ajay alias Babu Vijay Vishwakarma (24) and interrogated him. He confessed to the crime”, said Sub-Inspector Praveen Mahamuni, Investigating Officer, Powai Police Station.

During the interrogation of the accused, he said that he had sold the jewelry with the help of one of his accomplices Amjad Afzal Khan (34). Powai police have arrested Amjad Khan with Mahendra Tulsiram Ghanchi (30) and Radhyesham Rammurad Soni (42) for buying stolen jewelry.

Search for Jewelry in the Gutter

The accused, Ajay, had informed the police that he had thrown the diamond jewelry in the gutter as he felt it was fake. Based on this information, the police, with the help of workers, searched the gutter at Nalasopara but found nothing.

Police have recovered jewellery worth Rs 24,97,500 from the possession of the accused. Police also seized a Scooty and a washing machine purchased with the loot.

Under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankit Goyal (Zone 10), Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sakinaka Division) Milind Khetle, Senior Police Inspector (addl-charge) Vijay Dalvi, Police Inspector (Crime) Dilip Dhamunase, police Sub Inspector Praveen Mahamuni, Police Naik Babu Yedge, Police Naik Nitin Khairmode, police Constable Brijesh Pawar, Constable Sachin Galande, Constable Abhijit Jadhav and Constable Prashant Dhuri carried out the investigation.
