In a heart-warming effort to bridge cultural gaps and foster local integration, the Powai Bengali Welfare Association (PBWA) has launched an innovative Marathi language learning program. Designed to help the Bengali community communicate more effectively with local residents, the initiative is receiving an enthusiastic response.
Focusing on Three Pillars of Literacy
The curriculum goes beyond basic greetings, focusing strictly on three core areas: Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Classes are held every Sunday at the association’s office located in Hira Panna Mall, Hiranandani, Powai.
The sessions are conducted by renowned educator Navneet Dhomse Sir, whose simple and effective teaching methods have sparked a genuine interest in the Marathi language among participants. The initiative was conceptualized by Ashok Mukherjee and is being successfully executed under the leadership of PBWA President Sourav Mitra. Organizers believe such linguistic integration is the need of the hour for social harmony.
A Rich Legacy of Social Commitment
Established in 2006, PBWA is more than just a cultural or linguistic hub; it has built a formidable reputation through extensive social work:
- Healthcare Services: The association operates a dedicated ambulance service, providing a critical lifeline for patients during medical emergencies.
- TB Eradication: As an active partner in the Government of India’s Tuberculosis Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the organization provides nutritional support and rations to TB patients and their families.
- Women Empowerment: Through its flagship project ‘Mission Swayamsiddha,’ the association provides skill development training to women from economically weaker sections, helping them achieve financial independence and social dignity.
Rural Impact: Recognized by NITI Aayog
The organization’s reach extends far into the tribal pockets of Maharashtra. In the Talasari block of Palghar district, PBWA has renovated toilets across 77 Zilla Parishad schools under the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program.
This project specifically aimed to reduce the dropout rate of schoolgirls caused by poor sanitation facilities. The successful implementation in villages like Zhari, Girgaon, and Amgaon was recognized by NITI Aayog, which honored the project as a ‘Best Practice’ in rural development.
By blending language education with grassroots social service, the Powai Bengali Welfare Association is proving to be a true catalyst for social transformation and national integration.
