Senior Police Inspector (Sr PI) Budhan Sawant of Powai Police Station retired on August 30, and Senior Police Inspector JITENDRA SONAVANE has taken charge. Sonavane, who has worked in various police stations across Maharashtra, led the investigation into the Akola kidney racket case. On Thursday, September 14, he took charge as Senior Police Inspector of Powai Police Station.
Earlier, Sonawane was working as a Senior Police Inspector at Taloja Police Station, Navi Mumbai. Having previously worked in the police stations around Powai, he has a good knowledge of the area.
Sonawane is a 1996 batch officer who has worked in various areas of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. He has extensive experience working in various positions, from police sub-inspector to police inspector, in both urban and rural areas. He has worked in branches such as Police Station and Crime Branch in busy and sensitive areas of Mumbai and Maharashtra.
During his police career in 2015, while working in the local crime branch of Akola, he headed the solving of a complex kidney racket crime and ensured that the accused were severely punished. The threads of this crime exposed Sri Lankan connections. His investigation into the crime of an international kidney-selling racket has given him a new identity.
Although the area under the jurisdiction of the Powai Police Station is quiet, he has to pay special attention to sensitive places such as IIT Mumbai. Powai is a neighborhood that includes both elite colonies and slums, so a balance must be worked out.
During his tenure of 26 years, he has handled new cases every day. Even seemingly simple cases can be very complex, so he believes he will remain focused on handling every case that comes his way.
After assuming charge, Sr PI Sonawane interacted with all the officers and staff of the police station and discussed various problems and required measures for the area.
