Powai and Chandivali Residents Form United Front Against Proposed Mega-Infrastructure Projects

Association of residential welfare associations, Advanced Locality Managements (ALMs), and local community leaders convened on Sunday, 02 August at Lake Castle Podium to outline a high-level strategic and legal response to proposed large-scale commercial and residential developments in the Powai–Chandivali belt.

The emergency summit, organized under the aegis of the Powai Action Forum and Powai ALM, was called to address growing civic concerns regarding the approval process and infrastructure impact of two major urban development plans:

A Proposed GCC, Retail, and Entertainment Hub: Plans detailing a 30,000-seat complex, including a shopping mall and 30 multiplex screens situated near Forest Park. Residents voiced severe concern over projected daily vehicular ingress (~30,000 vehicles) against a proposed parking capacity of roughly 2,500 spaces, warning of catastrophic congestion on narrow internal conduits such as Forest Street.

Project Affected Persons (PAP) Housing Units: The proposed construction of 11 high-density PAP buildings comprising 3,850 residential units, accompanied by an estimated 614 parking spaces.

Auxiliary Commercial Expansions: Planned expansions encompassing IT ancillary structures, serviced apartments, luxury villas, and hospitality units.

Primary Objections & Key Resolutions

During the session, community stakeholders formally challenged the validity of the current clearance trajectory, alleging that environmental impact assessments and traffic feasibility studies rely on outdated metrics derived from 2021 COVID-era movement patterns rather than active baseline data.

Following extensive deliberation, the assembly unanimously adopted a multi-pronged resolution strategy:

Legal Intervention: The alliance authorized legal counsel to draft and submit formal objections challenging the environmental clearances and procedural bypass of statutory public consultations.

Mass Representation Drive: Initiation of a synchronized, community-wide petition drive across all constituent housing societies to be submitted to municipal and state administrative bodies.

Administrative Escalation: Formation of a dedicated delegation to engage directly with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), local planning authorities, and state environmental committees to demand an immediate stay on proceedings pending updated traffic and utility impact assessments.

Representatives emphasized that while local stakeholders support planned urban growth, development must align with existing utility baselines, road capacities, and environmental sustainability standards.

Further public advisories and action updates are expected to be circulated via participating residential welfare networks over the coming days.
