In a major administrative reshuffle aimed at fortifying law and order across Mumbai, the city police force has implemented key personnel changes. Notably, Atmaji Shivaji Sawant, a veteran and highly decorated officer renowned for his exceptional investigative prowess, has officially assumed charge as the new Senior Police Inspector (Sr. PI) of the Powai Police Station. Recognised widely for his supreme ability to breaking criminal networks and resolve intricate cases, Sawant is expected to bring a proactive approach to Powai’s unique policing landscape, with a specialised focus on curbing narcotics-related activities in the area.
Before his current posting in Powai, Senior PI Sawant served a distinguished and impactful tenure with the Mumbai Police Crime Branch and the Anti-Narcotics Cell (Ghatkopar Unit). Over the course of his career, he has consistently demonstrated tactical brilliance, immense courage, and intellectual sharpness while handling organised crime and high-stakes investigations. His reputation as a trusted investigator for sensitive and high-profile cases makes him an invaluable asset to the jurisdiction.
One of the most remarkable achievements in his career involved cracking a five-year-old “cold case” that had puzzled authorities. The incident, which was initially filed as a routine and tragic road accident, was subjected to a fresh, rigorous investigation by Sawant’s team. Utilizing advanced forensic evidence, an extensive intelligence network, and meticulous investigative techniques, he successfully proved that the death was, in fact, a cold-blooded, pre-planned murder fueled by a financial dispute. This breakthrough led to the apprehension of four primary suspects, finally delivering justice to a grieving family that had long lost hope.
Beyond solving homicides, Sawant has been at the forefront of the city’s aggressive war on drugs. He has spearheaded operations that dismantled multi-crore illicit drug manufacturing units across Maharashtra, effectively crippling local supply chains.
Powai presents a multifaceted policing challenge, home to prestigious institutions like IIT Bombay, bustling corporate hubs, and dense residential complexes. Addressing these, Sawant shared with AVARTAN POWAI that his primary focus will be tackling cybercrime and ensuring the safety of women and residents. Furthermore, he emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics, pledging to eradicate the local drug menace.
Local residents and social activists have warmly welcomed his appointment. Upon taking charge, Senior PI Sawant reiterated his commitment to proactive policing, enhancing public safety, and fostering a stronger, transparent bond between the police and the community.
