Caretaker Steals Gold Chain value Rs 80K from 94-Year-Old Woman

In a shocking incident reported from the upscale Hiranandani Gardens area of Powai, a caretaker allegedly fled after stealing a gold chain from her 94-year-old employer. A complaint has been lodged at the Powai Police Station, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the accused.

According to the police complaint filed by Madhumita Subramaniam, she resides with her family in the ‘Glen Ridge’ building at Hiranandani Gardens. Her 67-year-old father, Subramaniam Sharma, and 94-year-old grandmother, Vijaya Sudarsanam, live in the flat directly opposite theirs. Due to her advanced age, the grandmother required a full-time caretaker for daily assistance.

Recently, after their previous helper went on leave, Mr. Subramaniam contacted ‘Human Care World,’ a manpower agency associated with his company. The agency recommended Hiramani Khalkho (29), a resident of Nalasopara, claiming she was experienced and reliable. Trusting the agency’s word, the family hired her on April 20, 2026.

Early Morning Theft and Escape

The theft came to light on Monday, April 27, around 6:00 AM. When Mr. Subramaniam woke up, he was startled to find the main door of the flat wide open. Upon searching the house, he realized that Hiramani was missing.

Suspicious of her sudden disappearance, the family checked the internal CCTV footage. The recording showed Hiramani leaving the flat at approximately 3:00 AM with her belongings. Shortly after, the family discovered that the gold chain around the grandmother’s neck-weighing roughly 20 grams and valued at approximately Rs 80,000-was missing.

The family immediately approached the Powai Police Station to register a formal FIR against Hiramani Khalkho. The police have booked the accused for theft and is currently tracking her location using her provided address and mobile number.

Furthermore, investigators are looking into whether the recruitment agency, ‘Human Care World,’ had conducted a proper background check on the accused before placing her with the family.

Police Advisory: Following the incident, the Powai Police have urged citizens to exercise extreme caution. They emphasized that it is mandatory to collect complete personal details and conduct a formal Police Verification before hiring any domestic help or caretaker.
