Elderly Driver Smashes into 14 Vehicles in Powai; Two Seriously Injured

A serial accident occurred in Powai area near the Tata Power House on Saturday afternoon, leaving two people seriously injured and causing extensive damage to 14 vehicles. An 72-year-old resident of Lokhandwala, Andheri allegedly lost control of his electric car, leading to a high-speed pile-up that caused panic in the locality.

The incident took place around 3:00 PM. According to the Powai Police, the control room received an emergency call reporting a series of collisions near Tata Power. Constable Sumit Pratap, who was on duty as Beat Marshal 4, immediately rushed to the spot.

Upon arrival, he found a white Mahindra BE 6 electric car (Registration No: MH 02 GP 4171) that had hit into several stationary and moving vehicles. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, stating that the car was “running wild” on the road, hitting everything in its path.

The driver has been identified as Uday Laxmikant Sanghvi, a 72-year-old resident of Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West. During the initial investigation, Sanghvi provided a statement explaining the cause of the disaster. “The driver is a senior citizen. In his statement, he claimed that while driving, he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, which caused the car to surge forward uncontrollably,” a senior police official said.

Two people sustained serious injuries in the crash:

Sahebrav Yallappa Pawar and Pancham Subhedar Maurya. Pawar suffered severe injuries to his head and shoulders, while Mr. Maurya sustained injuries to his back and left leg. Both were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in Powai for treatment. The driver, Uday Sanghvi, also sustained minor injuries and was provided medical care.

The impact of the collisions was so severe that 14 vehicles – including motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, and private cars were damaged. The police have recorded the registration numbers of all affected vehicles, which include: MH 09 BD 5914, MH 03 CT 6305, MH 03 BL 7016, MH 03 CL 6380, MH 03 EX 3152, MH 04 MN 3519, MH 03 BG 9204, MH 01 DN 0682, MH 02 DB 1871, MH 03 DM 7084, MH 04 JN 6558, MH 03 DM 8777, MH 03 DE 6919, and MH 47 AA 8014.

The Powai Police have registered a case against Sanghvi under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, along with Sections 125(a), 281, and 324(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He is charged with rash and negligent driving and endangering the lives of others.
