In a significant move to reclaim public spaces for citizens, the state government has initiated a crackdown on drug abuse and anti-social activities surfacing in the parks of Powai and Chandivali. The decision follows a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister of State for Excise, Shambhuraj Desai, at the Sahyadri Guest House, initiated by the persistent efforts of local MLA Dilip (Mama) Lande.
For months, residents of Hiranandani Powai, Chandivali, and Raheja Vihar had raised alarms over the rising presence of drug peddlers and hooligans in local gardens. Addressing these grievances, Minister Desai has directed the administration and law enforcement to operate in “Mission Mode” to ensure these recreational hubs are restored to their original purpose: safe havens for families.
Strategic Action Plan
To tackle the menace effectively, the meeting outlined a multi-pronged strategy:
- Intensive Police Crackdown: A specialized drive will be launched by the police department to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the sale and consumption of narcotics.
- 24/7 Security Deployment: Dedicated security guards will be stationed around the clock at all sensitive parks to deter criminal elements.
- Technological Upgrades: Emphasis has been placed on installing high-definition CCTV cameras and improving lighting systems to eliminate “dark spots” that often attract illicit activities.
- Enhanced Vigilance: Under the supervision of DCP (Zone 10) Datta Nalawade, patrolling will be intensified, particularly during late-night hours.
Collaborative Leadership
The meeting saw a strong representation of both administrative officials and community leaders. Alongside MLA Dilip Lande, who vociferously advocated for the safety of his constituents, the session was attended by DCP Datta Nalawade, Shakha Pramukh Shivaji Suryavanshi, and Sanjay Tiwari of the Hiranandani Residents’ Association. Other prominent attendees included Ashok Matekar, Ravindra Mhaske, Prayag Lande, Mahadevan ji, and Dattatray Kumbhar from the Nisarg Foundation.
The proactive stance taken by the ministry, driven by MLA Lande’s consistent follow-up, marks a turning point for the Powai-Chandivali neighborhood. With these measures in place, residents can look forward to a future where children and senior citizens can once again enjoy their local parks without fear.
