Powai Residents Meet BMC Commissioner Over Traffic and Civic Concerns Regarding Proposed GCC

Powai residents meet the BMC Commissioner to raise urgent concerns over traffic congestion and civic infrastructure linked to the proposed GCC project.A delegation from the Powai Action Forum (PAF) met with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Ashwini Bhide (IAS) at the BMC Headquarters to raise pressing citizen concerns regarding the proposed Global Capability Centre (GCC) and large-scale commercial developments in Powai.

The delegation was led by Dr. Ratan Sharda, Ramesh Rath, Vikas Gupta, Ms. Shobha Philips, Ms. Vandana Dewan, Anirban Banerjee, and Jayman Khona. Senior BMC officials were also present during the constructive 15-minute discussion.

The forum submitted a formal petition backed by more than 2,000 physical signatures from local residents. The delegation highlighted that the massive 30,000-seat GCC project, alongside additional commercial infrastructure, is expected to bring over 100,000 people and up to 25,000 vehicles daily into an already congested residential zone.

Residents emphasized that narrow access roads, such as the 60-foot Forest Street, and a severe shortage of planned parking-providing barely 2,500 bays-will overwhelm civic systems and block emergency routes to facilities like Hiranandani Hospital. Concerns were also raised regarding safety around nearby school clusters, strain on water and drainage lines, and ecological damage to Powai Hills.

The delegation urged civic authorities to conduct an independent, realistic cumulative traffic and environmental impact assessment before further construction proceeds.
