A shocking case of house theft has emerged from a high-profile residential society in the Raheja Vihar area of Chandivali, Powai. A domestic helper is accused of breaching the employer’s trust and decanting gold jewelry valued at approximately Rs 7.44 lakh. Following the incident, the complainant, Niklesh Dias (37), lodged a FIR at the Powai Police Station.
According to the Powai Police, Dias resides with his family in the Raheja Vihar complex. For the past six months, a woman named Gudiya had been employed at their home for domestic help. While Dias and his wife were away for work, his 64-year-old mother and 3-year-old daughter typically remained at home.
The theft came to light on the night of February 14, 2026. Earlier that day, Dias and his wife had visited Mahakali, Andheri, to attend a program at their daughter’s school. Upon returning home around 8:30 PM, Dias was sorting clothes for the laundry when he unexpectedly found a jewelry box inside the laundry bag. To his shock, the box was empty. He immediately checked the wooden cupboard where the family’s valuables were stored and discovered that all the gold ornaments were missing.
Details of the Stolen Ornaments
According to the complaint, the thief decamped with valuables worth a total of Rs 7,44,000. The stolen items include 7 gold chains worth Rs 2 lakh, gold pendants worth Rs 64,000, 5 gold rings worth Rs 1.20 lakh, and bracelets and earrings (tops) worth Rs 40,000.
Suspicion on Domestic Help
Investigating officers noted that between January 2 and February 14, 2026, no outsiders or guests had visited the residence. “Since only the domestic help, Gudiya, had regular access to the house and knowledge of the cupboard’s location, the complainant has expressed strong suspicion against her,” said a senior police official.
The Powai Police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A search is currently underway to apprehend the suspect. Meanwhile, the police have issued an advisory to citizens, urging them to conduct thorough background checks and mandatory police verification before hiring domestic staff to prevent such criminal occurrences.
